Flyway
Live performance sequencer

Flyway is an improvisation-oriented sequencer that I developed and coded for the monome norns music computer. It focuses on the manipulation and transformation of a melodic shape. Players create these shapes using MIDI knobs or sliders and control rhythm using a monome grid. The shape of the melody can be quickly altered, and players can manipulate a given shape by altering the loop length, and by scaling the shape over any pitch range to drastically change its character. A virtual bird flies the shape of the melody. The Lua code can be viewed here.

This project grew out of a desire to create sequencers that are highly responsive and well-suited to improvised performance, in contrast to traditional sequencers whose programming is more akin to music notation and whose behaviour is more suited to fixed, repeatable performances.
